    In 1851, Alexander is a 14 year old living with at Lint Riggs, Stirlingshire,with his parents and 4 siblings, his occupation being Iron Moulder. Alexander immigrated to Australia as a single man on an unassisted passage without any other memberers of his family when he was 20 years old. He boarded the "Mindoro" which left Liverpool on 22 April 1856 and arrived in Melbourne on 14 July 1856. He purchased the land prior to his marriage.and built the cottage where the family lived, he waas described as a labourer on his arrival in Australia and he soon moved to Castlemaine where he worked as a foundry employee with Vivian & Co. and later with Thompson's Foundry where his eldest two sons, Hugh and Thomas, worked w ith him. Messrsrs Vivian & Co. Foundry began operations in 1857 and was probably the earliest foundry in Castlemaine, it was partially destroyed by fire in 1877 when Thompson's Foundry purchased most of the machinery. Alexander acquired two adjoining blocks of land facing Verlin Street and Happy Valley Road in Castlemaine in an original subdivision of land in 1862, the two blocks are numbered 14 and 15 on the original subdivision plan, which still shows the name "A.Monteath" and an area of about 65,000 square feet with the measurements shown in acres, rods and perches. The original cottage was built by Alexander in 1862 and was still in use some 120 years later. He died at 56 years of age in 1893 of exhaustion caused by iron dust in his lungs from the foundry.

    Mary lived for 64 years in Victoria after her arrival on board the "Reaper" back in 1853, she married at 18 years in her parents home at Moonlight Flat, she had 14 children, 11 of whom had families of their own. At the time of her death in 1915 she was living at Barkers Road, Kew.

    Alexander and Mary were married at the father of the brides 's home at Moonlight Flat near Castlemaine. Both were members of the Presbyterian denomination. Moonlight Flat was a well-populated locality in those days.
